The art of bonsai has been studied in Japan for over a thousand years. Literally translated as 'tray planting', the term refers to the aesthetic miniaturisation of trees by growing them in small containers. Although the basic techniques used to cultivate bonsai are relatively straightforward, it can take a lifetime of patient study to become a bonafide bonsai master.
During your stay in Tokyo, it's easy to make a day trip to Omiya, Japan's premier bonsai district. Here InsideJapan can arrange for you to join a bonsai class with an expert instructor. The class will be made up of a mix of Japanese and foreign residents or tourists, and as learning by doing is key, you'll be provided with all the materials necessary to gain an insight into classic bonsai care techniques. At the end of the two hour class you'll be able to see many fine bonsai exhibits at a renowned bonsai museum and garden. The instructor can help you arrange the transportation of a bonsai tree home at additional cost.
