Tatsue-ji temple stay
Temple number 19 of Shikoku's 88 temple circuit, Tatsue-ji offers overnight stays in simple shukubo lodgings.
A short distance from the city of Tokushima, Tatsue-ji is temple number 19 on Shikoku's famous 88 temple circuit, Japan's most significant Buddhist pilgrimage route. InsideJapan can arrange for you to stay in the temple's shukubo lodgings alongside many henro, the pilgrims making their way around the circuit.
Befitting the humble origins of the pilgrimage, the temple lodgings are fairly basic with shared bath and toilet facilities and simple Japanese-style rooms with tatami floors and futon mattresses. But with a bit of luck, you'll have the chance to meet some Japanese henro, eat and pray alongside them, and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the temple.
