Elegant kiriko glassware appeared during the later years of the Edo Period (1603-1868) and it's modern form has recently seen a huge revival in popularity. Today delicate glassware sake cups, bowls and vases are often given at celebratory occasions - the Imperial family and prime minister often present visiting dignitaries with kiriko glassware gifts.
To learn more about the glass cutting techniques behind kiriko we can arrange for you to visit a family of master craftsman who have been practicing the art for four generations. They'll introduce you to simple glass cutting skills and materials so you can create your own piece. There's also the opportunity to visit the atelier to view a selection of the family's glassware pieces.
