Yubutake
Visit the hot water fields of Yubutake in the centre of Kusatsu Onsen - one of Japan's most-loved onsen towns.
Yubutake means 'hot water field' in Japanese - an apt name for this hugely productive hot spring where 5,000 litres bubble up from the ground every minute. The water is more than 70 degrees Celsius and is then cooled down via wooden conduits before being funnelled off to supply ryokan and public bath houses in and around Kusatsu. At night Yubutake is illuminated and as steam rolls around the streets it's an atmospheric sight.
Guests overnighting at any Kusatsu ryokan are given yukata (light kimono) and geta (wooden sandals). It's customary to wear these around the town as you visit different bath houses to soak in the hot springs.
