Kushiro
Kushiro is the largest city in Eastern Hokkaido and is home to Japan's largest marshland - making it a popular stop for birdwatchers who come in search of the Japanese crane and other species.
“Japan? Surely this must be the African savannah! With rivulets running like veins across vast marshes, huge inland lakes and an amazing array of wildlife, you will feel nothing short of free exploring the wilderness the Kushiro plains have to offer.”
Rachel Rykala, Expert Travel Consultant
Kushiro is known as the 'town of mist', and plays a leading role in the politics, economics and culture of eastern Hokkaido. Its port flourished during the 20th century, and the Fishermen's Wharf MOO is a popular attraction to see the business in action, and don't miss a wander around indoor Washo Fish Market. Here you can try katte-don, a bowl of rice topped with whichever fish you like from the market.
It is also the gateway to the Kushiro Wetlands, which represents a third of the entire marshland in Hokkaido. It is rich in wildlife and maintains diverse ecosystems including those of the symbolic Japanese crane, the sika deer and the red fox, as well as many rare species of fish, amphibians and reptiles. There are several viewpoints that are exceptionally scenic, and there is a slower train that can bumble you along at eye level. It's easy to organise a comfortable horseback ride through the plains, or why not canoe down the mighty Kushiro river?
