With countless trips through one of the greatest countries on the planet, we’ve racked up a fair few special memories along the way. In celebration, our Social Media Coordinator Brock Horning has rounded up 10 of our favourite photos from our Japan travels in 2018.
Deer in Miyajima
InsideJapan travel consultant Simona caught this brilliant moment in October as a pair of local deer scout for food on Miyajima Island. These sacred, yet cheeky, creatures are believed to be messengers of the Shinto gods and roam the island searching for snacks.
Takachiho Gorge
An incredibly dramatic view of Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, snapped by InsideJapan Agent Sales Executive Lawrence. Renting a nearby rowing boat is the best way to explore the impressive natural scenery.
Ukiyo-e Small Museum
InsideJapan travel consultant Julia couldn’t help but take a photo of the Ukiyo-e Small Museum with the most unpredictable opening hours we’ve ever seen! I’ve just found my work life goals…
Gokuraku-ji Temple
Resident Buddhism expert and InsideJapan tour leader Richard captured this wonderful photo whilst wandering the grounds of Gokuraku-ji Temple in Kinosaki Onsen, a classic Japanese hot spring resort town with traditional wooden houses sitting along the willow-lined river.
Deer
Our Get The Picture InsideJapan photography competition earlier in the year brought up some brilliant photos of Japan – we were hard pressed to pick the winners! After much debate, this amazingly expressive deer snapped by Nick Borland was selected as one of the runners-up.
Shrine Spirits at Fushimi Inari Shrine
Talking of our Get The Picture Inside Japan photography competition, it would be remiss not to follow with the grand prize winner, this incredible long-exposure within the famous Fushimi Inari shrine by Owen Roberts.
Autumn Leaves
Autumn in Japan is simply spectacular, as you can see with this photograph from InsideJapan tour leader Mike, taken during our Hidden Japan small group tour. Autumn colours appear across Tokyo and Kyoto from mid-November, turning Japanese maple trees russet red.
teamLab Borderless Digital Art Museum, Tokyo
There was a lot of excitement at InsideJapan HQ at the opening of teamLab Borderless’ Digital Art Museum in Odaiba, Tokyo this year. It certainly didn’t disappoint, and InsideJapan travel consultant Aaron spent hours in awe of the mind-bending and interactive exhibits.
Mount Fuji
No photography series of Japan would be complete without at least one sighting of Mount Fuji! The sacred mountain has been caught here by InsideJapan’s Patrick, with the orderly lines of a tea plantation in the foreground. Getting clear views of Fuji-san are not guaranteed, but travelling in the winter months will greatly increase your chances.
Kanazawa cherry blossom (sakura)
Last, but certainly not least, is this beautiful photo from Kanazawa, caught during the springtime sakura earlier this year by InsideJapan tour leader Mark. Kanazawa is one of Japan’s best-preserved historical cities, with a wonderful samurai quarter, fascinating geisha district, traditional crafts and one of the top (if not the top) landscape gardens in Japan.
