Matsuyama's literary heroes
Follow in the footsteps of authors and haiku poets
Book lovers will enjoy Matsuyama's literary connections. Natsume Soseki's popular novel Botchan was set here. Written in 1906, the plot follows the fortunes of a young teacher who leaves Tokyo to resettle in Matsuyama around the time of the turbulent Meiji Restoration. Soseki's friend, the poet Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) also lived in Matsuyama, and is credited with the modern development of haiku poetry. In Shiki's former house meet a local literary group for a creative lesson in the art of haiku. Share your poetic creations inspired by modern-day Matsuyama.
