Tsukiji fish market tasting tour
Take a guided tour of the world's largest wholesale fish market.
Every day a staggering amount of seafood produce arrives at Tsukiji fish market and is laid out for shop and restaurant buyers from across Japan to assess. The market is a place of ordered chaos as people rush from one end of the market to the other weaving between electric delivery carts laden with Styrofoam boxes full of the freshest catch.
InsideJapan can arrange a special guided tour of the outer fish market with plenty of time to stop and taste the curious mix of different food to be found here. As well as seafood, Tsukiji also has a huge vegetable and fruit market, stores selling pickles and other curious tasting items, purveyors of fresh wasabi root (an essential for any sushi or soba restaurant), tofu producers, knife stores and even the odd souvenir store with Tsukiji memorabilia such as t-shirts and straps for your mobile phone. Your guide will introduce you to Japanese food preparation and a little of the history of Japanese cuisine as we know it today. To finish, there will be an early brunch at one of the tiny sushi counter restaurants found inside the market.
