Explore “Kyoto's Kitchen”, a bustling arcade of all manner of colourful, yet unidentifiable ingredients.
Nishiki Market, a long, narrow arcade known informally as Kyoto's Kitchen, is a packed cavern of all sorts of exotic fish, vegetables, pickles and sweets heaped in large barrels and labelled in intricate kanji. Dating back to the 14th century, many of the 200 or so shops have been in the same families for generations and most specialise in a certain type of food. Today as hoards of Kyotoites and tourists shuffle down the arcade, sellers readily give out samples of dried squid on skewers or sushi tasters.
