Conveyor belt sushi
Super fast, very cheap and oh-so-tasty. How many sushi plates can you eat in one sitting?
Now popular in the West, kaitenzushi (conveyer belt sushi) restaurants are still the cheapest, quickest and most fun way to grab a sushi meal in Japan. From the weird to the wonderful, most restaurants include Western-palette friendly egg sushi and cucumber rolls, tuna, mackerel and prawn sushi to the more adventurous eel and fish roe varieties. A trivia fact: the word sushi actually refers to the rice, not the fish.
Ordering kaitenzushi is a no-brainer; simply grab a passing plate and tuck in. Plates may be priced a flat rate or colour-coded in price tiers, but at the end of your meal a waitress will simply count up your empty plates to determine your bill. Green tea, radish and wasabi are always served free of charge.
