Bunraku
See this classic form of puppet theatre at the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka
An enchanting form of puppet theatre originating in Osaka, Bunraku has been enjoyed by Japanese audiences for hundreds of years with the traditions and techniques of this art form remaining relatively unchanged over that time.
The puppets themselves are skilfully crafted and each one requires three puppeteers to operate the full range of movements and emotions. The tragedies, love stories, legends and historical tales depicted by puppets are voiced by a single but extremely versatile narrator and accompanied by the sound of a shamisen.
