Odaiba
The man-made island of Odaiba is a worthy day trip from central Tokyo
Odaiba was built as a fort island at the end of the Edo era, but today it's a popular district for shopping and entertainment. You can take a boat cruise along the Sumida River to get there, and the monorail across the Rainbow Bridge back to central Tokyo.
Odaiba is home to some great museums including the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The former is filled with hands-on science exhibits, while the latter is the place to go to meet Asimo the walking robot. Also on Odaiba is the Legoland Discovery Centre, and Joypolis, a Sega amusement park with video games and rides.
Older kids might like shopping at the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza mall, or head to Oedo Onsen Monogatari, a huge Edo-era themed hot spring complex which is a particularly good place for chilling out on rainy days.
