National Geographic Traveller - Pol O'Conghaile
Having visited Japan on a number of occasions, Pol O'Conghaile thought he'd seen all the best bits, but on a recent trip to Tohoku, he fell in love with the country all over again. Known for the devestating earthquake of March 2011, Tohoku is a region in the north of Japan blessed with dramatic rugged landscapes, ancient forests and deep-rooted traditions. Here tradition and modernity blend seamlessly, as Pol discovered when he joined the Yamagushi mountain priests for a day.
InsideJapan Tours has a 14-night Northern Highlights self-guided adventure to Tohoku with departures in spring and autumn to make the most of the dramatic seasonal displays. The trip includes a night on Mount Haguro and some private guiding to really get a feel for the traditions and customs of the region.
