Visiting an onsen is an entirely unique Japanese experience and a must-do for Japan first-timers and the culturally curious. Whilst some first-timers might need to build up the courage to lose their clothes (observing strict onsen etiquette is all part of the experience), communal bathing is commonplace in Japan and a carefree attitude to nudity makes it significantly easier to lose all inhibitions, relax and quite literally soak up the atmosphere.
There are many different ways to experience onsen bathing on a trip to Japan, from private onsen baths in hotels to visits to hot spring towns. Many of InsideJapan's small group tours and self-guided adventures include onsen visits.
