Hida Furukawa

Just 15 minutes by train from Takayama is the characterful little town of Hida Furukawa - the region's best-kept secret.

The town is highly regarded for its top-quality carpentry and craftsmanship displayed in the well-preserved traditional wooden buildings. A small canal, named the Seto River, flows through the historic town centre, home to colourful koi carp. Each side of the canal is lined with white-walled stores houses characteristic of the Edo Era, and owing to the blessed absence of hordes of tourists, you almost feel as if you've stepped back in time to 17th century Japan.

Hida-Furukawa is all about strolling the well-preserved streets and soaking in the atmosphere and slow pace of life of an authentic mountain town of the Hida region - we think it's well worth the detour!
