In September 2013, this island group was included in the Global Geoparks Network (supported by UNESCO) for its stunning geological, ecological and cultural history. The Oki Islands are famous for the 13km long Kuniga Coast on Nishinoshima Island, which features dramatic sea cliffs, caves and open grassland areas where cows and horses graze. This area is best explored by sightseeing bus and boat, or by rent-a-cycle. There are many amazing spots for snorkeling and hiking around the coast. Several companies also offer sea kayaking and diving activities which are very popular.

These isolated islands have been a vital link between Japan and the Asian continent, as well as for trading ships around Japan. Emperors and nobles have also been exiled to Oki. This interesting past has created many unique Oki cultural traditions and shrine festivals. The local people are very proud of their beautiful island home and always give visitors a warm welcome.
