Nagano rural farm experience
A modern ryokan on a farm where you can try sushi making, carve chopsticks and canoe across Lake Hokuryuko.
You'll be forgiven for never having heard of Togarinozawa Onsen. It's a tiny town up in Nagano Prefecture, home to a remote farmland ryokan. The building is pretty modern from the outside but has lovely hot spring baths and the area is surrounded by farmland and countryside which you can explore while staying here.
A typical programme at the farm includes helping to make bamboo leaf sushi for lunch, traditional chopstick making and helping out with farm chores such as attending to the rice paddies and fruit picking. In the afternoon the ryokan owners will take you across Lake Hokuryuko by canoe, a great way to soak up the scenery.
