Awara Onsen

Unlike many historic hot spring areas in Japan, Awara Onsen was founded relatively recently when in 1883 a farmer stumbled across an 80-degree geothermal spring while digging an irrigation channel.

Today this mountainous corner of Fukui Prefecture is home to several ryokan resorts enticing visitors to bathe in the natural hot springs.

The town has five ashinoyu or foot baths where you can rest your weary feet. A nice choice if you're not so keen on getting fully naked for a communal bath Japanese-style! Nearby Yukemuri Yokocho offers a lantern-lit warren of yatai street food stalls where you can find tasty snacks from meat skewers to ramen, soba, seafood and more.
