Beppu
Beppu is probably Japan's favourite Onsen (hot spring) resort; it certainly produces the most spring water. The town has made a showcase of its volcanic activity.
“Beppu takes what Japan does best and concentrates it into a city of just 120,000 people. Great natural beauty in the hills of Yufuin, an abundance of steam and spa water from Beppu's restless foundations married with shameless kitsch commercialism. You could want for nothing more”

Packed into a small area you can see natural springs in a range of colours and even a geyser which happily conforms to the strict punctuality demanded by the Japanese. The famous, and explicit, Sex Museum may tickle your fancy or you may find the more family friendly nudity of the sand and mud baths more to your taste.
Or why not keep your clothes on and enjoy one of the restaurants specialising in food steamed in hot spring vapours? In fact there are a wide range of restaurants in Beppu as locals have learnt to cater for the wide range of nationalities which attend the town's international university.
An excellent day trip from Beppu is the small town of Yufuin. This charming town offers an eclectic range of museums and galleries, a healthy spread of cafes and eateries and a picturesque lake by which you can while away an hour or two. Once you reach Yufuin most attractions are within walking distance or it is possible to hire bikes to explore the wider area. And why not take the chance to visit the 1500 monkeys which have made Mount Takasaki (just outside town) their home?
