Fukui

Fukui, capital city of the eponymous prefecture, can be found between two of the big hitters of Japanese culture - Kyoto and Kanazawa - but is by no means any less interesting or historic. Fukui is well known within Japan itself for its ancient history links, with a big dinosaur museum housing the remains of Japan's own Cretaceous era wonders. The area is also home to the Echizen style of pottery, born in the city of Echizen - considered one of the 6 historic kilns of Japan.

Just outside of Fukui, you can find the Buddhist temple complex of Eiheiji. Nestled amidst towering cedar trees, Eiheiji exudes an aura of tranquility that envelops visitors the moment they step onto its sacred grounds. Founded in 1244 by Zen master Dogen Zenji, this spiritual haven has served as a refuge for seekers of inner peace for centuries.

Eiheiji's main hall, with its elegant architecture and soaring ceilings, serves as the epicenter of Zen practice. Within its walls, monks devote themselves to rigorous meditation, cultivating mindfulness and presence in every moment.
