Kashikojima
Located on the far tip of the Ise Peninsula, Kashikojima is a charming stretch of coastline offering views across a bay studded with little islands.
To best view the area, take a boat ride into the bay, past a series of oyster rafts, for which this area is most famous. Two types of boat make sightseeing cruises into Ago Bay: a rather gaudy 'Spanish galleon' which travels out into the deep water and smaller more conventional boats which zip between the islands closer to the shoreline.
A short distance up the railway tracks you will find Toba, home of the world famous Mikimoto Pearl company. It was here that the process of artificial pearl cultivation was first perfected and Pearl Island offers a superb museum tracing the development of pearl production and the Mikimoto company along with some superb examples of their most elaborate commissions! A show of diving for pearls is also an interesting spectacle.
Kashikojima is also close to Ise, home of Ise Shrine, the most sacred of all Japan's hundreds of thousands of Shinto shrines. A short distance along from Toba, Ise makes for an excellent half day of sightseeing. Near the inner shrine is a reconstructed street of old Japanese buildings, full of traditional style restaurants and souvenir shops, a great place to pick lunch after exploring the shrine. All in all Kashikojima makes for a great spot to relax while also offering some interesting cultural sightseeing close at hand.
