When is the best time to travel to Japan?
Japanese culture celebrates the seasons in a big way, with the result that a holiday to Japan has something wonderful to offer at every time of year.
Spring is the headline-grabber, with its swathes of pink cherry blossom, followed by fall with its explosion of autumn colours — but summer and winter have many charms (not least a dramatic drop in visitor numbers). When you decide to travel will ultimately depend on why you want to visit Japan.
As a general rule, winter is cold, clear and snowy (especially in the north), while summer is overcast, humid and hot (especially in the south). Spring and autumn are both balmy and beautiful — but busy. At any time of year, you’ll find cooler temperatures in the mountains, and Japan has plenty of those.
School breaks, Japanese holidays, bucket-list activities and personal preferences will all affect when you decide to travel, but we’ve tried to answer your commonly asked questions below.
