Winter travel to Japan
Winter in Japan is a wonderful season to travel and boasts many exciting experiences that cannot be found at any other time of year.
To begin with, Japan is a paradise for ski and snowboard lovers, with over 500 resorts and some of the world's best and most reliable powder snow. After a chilly day of skiing or sightseeing, you can rest your weary muscles in the onsen hot springs, while snowflakes fall all around. Then there is the winter food and drink - warm sake and nabe hotpot will warm you inside, while your feet are nestled are under a heated kotatsu table. Japan's winter wildlife are worth the trip alone: the snow monkeys bathing in the onsen of Yudanaka and the spectacular tancho red-crowned crane performing their mating dance in Hokkaido are just a few examples. Overall, there are fewer crowds traveling in the winter months, meaning that even iconic sights can be almost deserted. Finally, there are the winter illuminations and festivals - most notably the incredible, giant snow sculptures of the Yuki Matsuri in Sapporo.
